Your Skin Needling Questions Answered

I’m sure most of you have heard of skin needling at some stage and maybe are a little bit unsure of having needles in your face! Trust us it’s not as scary or as painful as it sounds!

Skin needling works by creating super fine micro-injuries in the skin. Your body reacts by sending in collagen and elastin to help “heal” these controlled injuries. As you probably already know, collagen and elastin are the building blocks of firm, glowing skin. So as your skin naturally ramps up production, it begins to look more youthful. Skin concerns that may have bothered you for years start to disappear. What’s better, it doesn’t inject anything deep into your skin. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that works with your skin’s biological function to improve the aesthetic appearance.

We often refer to skin needling as Dermapen. Dermapen is the name of the device used in our treatment. Dermapen™ is a medically engineered device that delivers world-leading microneedling procedures, only Dermapen™ uses a specialised spring-loaded cartridge that is automated by an oscillating system, delivering fast, fractional, and virtually painless procedures that are non-ablative. Dermapen’s patented technology delivers vertical channels into the skin minimising damage, downtime, and discomfort.

Customising speed and depth for each procedure leads to targeted results.

The 16-needle cartridge glides over the skin, creating up to 1,920 fractional micro-channels per second. Due to the microfine needles, incredible speed, and quality seals, a clinical procedure with the Dermapen 4 is virtually pain-free and finished in no-time.

The professional device penetrates the deeper layers of the skin, triggering the body’s natural healing response. The skin is oxygenated and lymphatic drainage activated, regenerating the treated area.

Acne/problematic skin

Problematic skin is often the result of overly active oil (sebaceous) glands and imbalanced hormones. The excess oil (sebum) gets trapped in your pores along with dead skin cells and debris, which can lead to painful inflammation and leave your skin prone to other bacteria. Combining clinical Dermapen microneedling procedures with an at-home routine of targeted skincare products helps you achieve the clear, glowing complexion you deserve.

Fine lines/wrinkles

Our skin’s renewal process slows down as we age, and Dermapen Treatments are the safe, natural way to visibly rejuvenate your skin. Dermapen Treatments for wrinkles noticeably smooth away lines.

Ageing/sun-damaged skin

Dermapen Treatments effectively reduce the appearance of age and sun spots, lines and wrinkles, thinning and sagging skin, which are all part of the natural ageing process due to reduced collagen in the skin. Microneedling stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production, boosting elasticity and repairing flaws.

Scars are caused by damage to the second layer of skin—the dermis. Scars can be frustrating additions to your face and other parts of your body, especially if they’re located in a highly visible area. Whatever the size, Dermapen Treatments can help. Dermapen Treatments involve reducing bulky scar tissue with targeted microneedling, activating regulated collagen to either flatten or plump the scarred region.

Pigmentation occurs when excess melanin (skin pigment) has been stimulated and deposited unevenly. Dermapen Treatments are highly effective for treating unwanted pigmentation. The treatment is for all skin shades, but is a particularly advantageous solution for dark skin tones, where laser treatments may not be the safest option due to further pigmentation risks.

There are 3 main types of rosacea that vary in symptoms from red erythema to papules and pustules and even a thickening of the skin. While there’s no known cure for rosacea, Dermapen Treatments can successfully minimise the appearance of common symptoms by normalising the creation of blood vessels (known as angiogenesis) and releasing regulatory growth factors. Dermapen Treatments also increase the integrity of the 2 layers of your skin (dermis and epidermis) to increase density and resiliency. Redness becomes visibly reduced and the complexion feels more balanced and less reactive.

Enlarged Pores

Enlarged pores are a common skin concern, especially if you’ve had acne or blackheads, and are usually more visible on the nose, cheeks and chin. The good news is that Dermapen Treatments are an effective and safe method to noticeably reduce enlarged pores and reveal smooth, glowing skin.

Stretch marks

Dermapen Treatments encourage the production and distribution of new collagen to remodel the stretch mark scar and greatly reduce its appearance.

Before performing a skin needling treatment we always ensure the skin is in optimal condition and is healthy to ensure you get the most benefit. We don’t recommend jumping straight in to skin needling if we are unfamiliar with your skin. This way we can ensure your skin maintains its health and you get maximum results from your treatment. Performing skin needling when the skin is not healthy can cause more harm than good. We usually recommend at least 2 enzymes and a good home care routine before we needle the skin.

Clients experiencing any of the following active conditions should not proceed with treatment. Papulopustular Rosacea, Acne Vulgaris Stage 3-5, Herpes Simplex, Warts, Scleroderma, Bacterial/Fungal Infections, Open Lesions, Solar Keratosis, SKin Cancer and Haemophilia.

There may be other conditions or medications that we need to consider before performing this treatment also, please advise your therapist of any medical conditions or medications.

Treatment may be done 14 days before or after anti wrinkle or filler injections.

We offer two services for Skin Needling, our stand alone treatment includes a cleanse, the needling procedure, exfoliating peel and hydrating sheet mask. Our Skin Needling with Enzyme treatment includes cleanse, microneedling, exfoliating peel, dmk enzyme mask and finishing products.

We encourage you not to use topical anaesthetic prior to treatment, we find when the numbing cream is used it creates less reactivity in the skin meaning we are not able to get as good results from your treatment.

Due to the nature of the treatment you can experience some redness and warmth after treatment, however this will subside quickly.

You may experience some flaking or purging of the skin a few days post treatment, this is perfectly normal. As we are encouraging new cellular turnover the dead built up skin will shed away and any breakouts within the skin can be released and removed. Within 4-5 days the skin will be completely back to normal functioning.

We can also apply our Cover Recover to camouflage any redness if you need to go about your day still! This product is designed to use after skin needling and gives the skin a cooling and calming feeling.

Any treatment that punctures the skin requires strict infection control to prevent cross-infection. Harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses can spread between the patient and practitioner if you don’t follow sterile/aseptic procedures or use unsanitary equipment. The Beauty Company has always placed immense importance on education, protocols, hygiene (sterile procedures), and PPE equipment for the safety of both therapist and client.

Every client is different and every skin journey is different so we always customise a program for you. Treatments are usually spaced up to 8 weeks apart.

After your treatment we recommend to not induce heat within the skin, avoid very hot showers, exercise, saunas, swimming pools, fake tanning or excessive sweating for 2 days.

It is extremely important to protect the skin from UV, hence why we tend to perform more of this treatment in Winter when the UV is less and we are not as exposed to the sun and heat.

Avoid using Vitamin A or other AHA, BHA products for 5 days post treatment than after 5 days perform a light exfoliant on the skin.
